LAST READING GUIDE EVER - 26:3
Last test of the year is on Friday - No short answer or multiple choice.
Today we explored the anti-war movement and counterculture movement of the 1960's. The antiwar movement accelerated the erosion of confidence in America's established institutions bringing about a revolution of rebellion. To better help us understand this ideology, we tie-dyed and watched Jimi Hendrix rock out at Woodstock.

Today we looked at the Vietnam conflict from the perspective of a soldier in the war. Fighting jungle warfare without knowledge of who or where the enemy was proved extremely difficult as well as stressful to our troops. Vietnam was a completely different type of war. **We did do any assignment in class. IF YOU MISSED TODAY, COME SEE ME DURING AIP ON WEDNESDAY FOR THE ASSIGNMENT. IT WILL TAKE THE ENTIRE AIP PERIOD TO COMPLETE! **All late work and extra credit was due today by 3:00!!! ** You personal histories are still being graded. Don't panic, they are NOT missing. ** We are talking about the counterculture next time! We will be tie dying so please bring a white shirt, pillow case, etc. to class with you!!! I will not have any for you here. Homework - Reading Guide - Chapter 27 - 1
Today we began our study of the Vietnam War, how it was different from the previous conflicts we were involved in, and how it began. To better understand this history, we held a rousing game of tug of war on the football field. Props to you all for participating. Hopefully it helped you understand the dynamics of this war and why it was so difficult for America to win! Homework - Reading Guide 26 - 2 Don't forget all late work and extra credit is due on Friday!
Today we switched gears from the peaceful protesters of the Civil Rights Era to the militant and aggressive protesters. Looking at the black power movement, Malcolm X, and black nationalism proved that many African Americans were tired of being patient and wanted change now. We then looked at the current state of racism including affirmative action. Have we taken equality too far? Do minorities have too much of an advantage now? Homework: Reading Guide 26 : 1 All late work and extra credit is due FRIDAY!!!
Today we continued our study of discrimination in America by watching three separate clips from a popular TV program called, "What would you do?" These clips portray the current feelings Americans have on the "racism" issues in our country today. We compared our modern reality to the infamous "dream" of Dr. Martin Luther King. Has his dream become a reality? Can it ever? Food for thought friends, food for thought. Homework - Reading Guide 25 - 3
Today we began our discussion of the early Civil Rights movements and finished the film, "42." Hopefully you were able to get a real sense of the racism and prejudice that existed at the time through viewing this movie.
With the year quickly coming to an end, please make sure you come see me NOW rather than LATER concerning your grades. Many of you are drifting away to summer vacation already. Stay strong! You can do it! Just a few weeks left! Homework - Reading Guide - Chapter 25: 2 EXTRA CREDIT REPOST This time period in history has several films that you can watch that portray the topics we discuss in some way. As always, you must complete a write up to obtain the extra credit. Write a typed, one-page, double spaced, 12 point font paper telling me how the film specifically exhibits characteristics of the time period that we discussed in class. For example, if you watch "Gidgit" you would write one page on how the pop culture, trends and ideologies of this time period are shown in the film giving examples. The films you can watch are below: (*These are subject to change) Cold War: The Majestic Blast From the Past 1950's: Mona Lisa Smiles Gidget Stepford Wives Rock and Roll: That thing you do Hairspray Grease Cuban Missile Crisis: X Men First Class 13 Days October Sky Civil Rights: Remember the Titans Glory Road The Butler The Help Thanks to a wicked stomach bug, you were lucky enough to have a free day today!
