One of the major turning points of the Civil War occurred when President Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, a document freeing the slaves in the border states as well as in the South. This single act changed the entire purpose of the war. Instead of fighting to unite the nation, Lincoln's actions pushed the slavery issue to the forefront of the war. If the North was victorious, slavery would finally and officially be eradicated.
