The turn of the century brought many social ills in American society from child labor, poor working conditions, and segregation to monopolies and corrupt government policies. A group of reformers began to emerge with the desire to improve society and make government accountable to the people. They were known as the progressivists. Today we looked at the issues they brought to the attention of the world and began to decide how to solve them.

As America began asserting its authority as a world power, our eyes were drawn towards the island neighbor of Cuba. Their lucrative sugar plantations and close proximity made us even more power hungry, but what to do about it? Today we continued to follow America's imperialistic ideals by studying the Spanish American War.

Immigration policy in our country is one of the most controversial and difficult topics to discuss. Today, we attempted to look deeper at reform movements regarding immigration and which policies are the most effective. If you were absent, you must come see me for the make up assignment. The Statue of Liberty is a symbol of welcome, the first sight many immigrants recognized upon arriving in America. However, despite America's policy of welcome, many Americans treated immigrants with prejudice and suspicion. Today we examined America's legal policies regarding immigration as well as how immigrants adapted to their new lives in the United States. We debated several hot topic immigrant issues that we will continue to discuss next class.
