Today we took the first midterm test of the year. You also turned in your seven sets of notes since the beginning of the year. Each set is worth 5 points total on your grade. You also need to turn in your study guide which counts for as much as the test on your grade! Get it done! If you did not take the test, you have one week to make it up! Today was review day for the test next class. You will need to turn in your study guide as well as your seven sets of notes before you take the test. These two assignments together will be worth as much if not more than your test, so don't slack! Good luck!
Today you were introduced to some of the more significant battles of the Revolutionary War. You should be familiar with at least one or two key characteristics of the battles we covered. If you were absent, be sure to get the notes from a friend.
Reminders: Midterms are this week. All grades will be updated by Thursday at 3:00. I collected work at the end of last week, so if there is any work you have turned in since then, it WILL NOT show up on your grades. Thursday will be a review for the test next Monday. You will need to turn in all the notes we have taken this far. You will receive points for them. Your study guide will be your biggest help to do well on the test. Good luck! Once the colonists decided there was no going back, they wrote a formal declaration of separation from England. Today we looked at the Declaration of Independence in detail and began writing our own version. Notes and assignment are below. Assignment: Take the official Declaration of Independence and re-write it including the main key points in a shorter version. (1 full page) Here is the catch - you have to re-write it in a slang version of your choice such as Bible, pirate, Shakespeare, #hashtags, surfer, rap, gangster, Harry Potter, etc. Be creative, but be sure to include the main ideas of the Declaration!!! Homework: Finish Slang Declaration of Independence DUE NEXT TIME!!!
Before the war began, there were three groups of Americans that existed; those that wanted to stay loyal to the crown, those that wanted to break away and those that were undecided. Today we debated each of their viewpoints.
If you were absent - Go see Mrs. Pike for the assignment the class completed before performing the debate. You will take on the role of one of the four groups that was discussed, fill out the sheet, and turn it in. Today we turned in your collages - if you did not have it ready, you will need to turn it in with a late pass for full credit. Homework =- As England's debt increased, they decided to tax the colonists for revenue. The colonists grew more and more upset - NOT because of the money, but because no one asked them. . . they were not being represented in Parliament! The notes from lecture are attached below. We spent a large portion of classtime working on our collage. (see explanation below) Homework: If you DID NOT finish in class, you must complete the following by next time! What is an American Collage: 1. Portray your interpretation of the modern American by making a collage (with pictures or words) on an 8 by 11 inch sheet of paper. None of the paper can be visible when you are finished. 2. On the back side of your collage, write 1 paragraph (at least 5 sentences) describing your interpretation in words. As time passed, the American colonists started to govern themselves and develop their own identity. Today we looked at the relationship between England (mother) and her colonies (children) and how it started to break down. Notes from today are below. Assignment: We started an assignment which we will finish next time. You will be creating a collage with pictures or words identifying what you think an American is TODAY. This will be due at the end of class next time. Homework: None Reminders: Friday is my last day of school before I go on maternity leave. You will be able to contact me via email while I am away, however, you should treat the long term sub as if she is your teacher.
Each region in the New World of America had its own unique characteristics. Today we examined those differences as well as similarities between the colonies. We enjoyed a little homemade butter and bread to top off the colonial experience.

I will return at the end of October just as 1st quarter comes to an end. One major reason for colonization in the America's was religious freedom. Both the Pilgrims and the Puritans came to the New World so they could worship how they wanted. Today we looked at how religion shaped these colonies, including the Salem Witch Trials. Imagine you have been selected to be one of the first 100 people to live in an experimental colony on the planet Mars. There is no promise of your success or survival. Would you still go? Why (not)? This scenario is very similar to how early explorers and colonists would have felt about coming to the New World. Today we discussed the very first successful English colony, Jamestown.
