I am pushing the final due date back to next Thursday which will give you one extra day (Tuesday) to visit the writing lab for help and critiques. Take advantage of it because the next big paper is just a few days away!
Test next time folks! Please study. You haven't had a test in a while, so put in the time to get a decent grade! All reading guides, powerpoints, class discussions are fair game. All reading guides for this section must be turned in by Friday for ANY credit.
Please remember to go to the writing lab to get your immigration paper critiqued! Tuesday and Thursday after school from 2:30 to 3:30. They will keep track of who comes for help so I will know who to give points to. I will not be here on Friday, if you have any concerns, please email me. **If you were not here for talent day, the make up assignment is as follows: Go to the following website and read the blurb on vaudeville. Then write a typed double spaced paper on how vaudeville is the same/different as entertainment today. Make your case using specifics from the website. http://www.pbs.org/wnet/americanmasters/episodes/vaudeville/about-vaudeville/721/ Today was a fun filled day of talent and laughter. Bravo to you all for your amazing skills! Today was also the due date of your first rough draft. We did a peer edit, which you will find below. If you did not bring a rough draft with you today, PLEASE make sure to have someone edit your draft using the document below. The next step in the process is to have your paper edited by the Writing Lab. They are open on Tuesdays and Thursdays in room D-27 from 2:30 to 3:30. They will keep track of those students who attend and you will receive points for going in. If you have conflicts or problems getting there, come see me ASAP!!! Do not wait until it is too late! TEST on FRIDAY!!!!
Hopefully today you are able to formulate your own opinions on immigration as you delve into the hot topics of national policy. We compared immigration issues at the turn of the century to those of modern times examining who should be allowed to come into our country and what expectations we should have for them. This should give you a solid foundation as you begin writing your immigrant paper which is due next time!!!! *Homework - No reading guide - Rough Draft of Immigration Paper - Get ready for test on January 31 ***Next class period we will be having a Talent Day/Stupid Human Tricks day. Please come to class prepared to share something - whether you are playing an instrument or spinning a basketball on your finger! You have to have something to share for points! ***
Today, although I was absent, you should have become familiar with the immigrant process at Ellis Island at the turn of the century. You will be responsible for the content you learned in your groups today - it will be on the test. If you were not here, find a friend and borrow their notes. This content is not in the textbook.
Homework: Reading Guide 13: 1 and 2 (Last one before the test!) Immigration Today (Have this ready for class on Wednesday) Remember, all late work was to be turned in today!!!!!! Today we looked at the flip side of the Industrial Revolution and the wealthy investors who ran the economy. The extreme wealth they accrued was due to the shady business tactics they followed that assured their pockets were full while the general population was scraping to just get by. The power point and video from class are attached below. Homework: Reading guide 13: 1 and 2 ***Remember that the last day to turn in anything for your grade is on FRIDAY!!!!!*****
Today we went over the basic outline of your next big paper. Please remember that you must find an immigrant to interview and write a 2 page paper on their experience. Intertwined with their story should also be your commentary on the immigrant experience in America. When interviewing, please make sure to ask thoughtful questions and record stories and experiences. We also discussed the workers and unions of the industrial era of post Civil War America. Who were these workers and what conditions did they suffer through? We looked deeper at this population by using the power point below as well as watching a clip from the fabulous film, "Newsies." Homework: Reading Guide 12:2 and 3 Start finding and interviewing your immigrant!!!
Today we concluded our reconstruction discussion with a friendly debate among the four potential interest groups of the time - Freedmen, Southern Democrats, Radical Republicans and the Moderates. After hashing out the opinions of each group, we learned what actually happened. The notes from class are attached below. Homework: Reading guide 12: 1 and 4 (Yes - we are skipping chapter 11) *Your next paper will require you interview someone who is an immigrant to our country. Please try to nail down your interviewee by next class period. If you have absolutely no idea who you can speak with, come see me. ***One last option for extra credit. After reading about Reconstruction, if you are interested there is a History Channel Documentary about the Ku KluxKlan on Youtube. Search "history channel kkk" and it is the first video that shows up. If you watch it, please do the following for extra credit: WARNING - THE KKK IS NOT A NICE GROUP. PLEASE BE AWARE THAT THEY USE FOUL LANGUAGE AT POINTS IN THE DOCUMENTARY THAT ARE OFFENSIVE. As you watched the video, it showed how the Klan has evolved throughout history. Write a one page typed, double-spaced paper on how the role of the KKK has changed from the 1860's to the 1920's to today.
Welcome back! Just a reminder that there is only 3 weeks before the quarter ends. This means all late work and extra credit will be due on January 17! If you are not passing - come see me immediately!!!
Today we began a simulation on rebuilding the South after the Civil War. We divided up into four groups of interested parties; freedmen, defeated Southern Leaders, Moderate Republican leaders, and Radical Republican leaders. Each group was required to address some important issues regarding how to "fix" the nation now that the war is over. We will resume this activity next class and conclude with a group debate on the issues at hand. It is to your benefit to understand the conclusions your group came to!
