Homework: Reading Guide 2:2 So after channel 4 news showed up with a camera in hand this morning, I just want to reiterate that our tax simulation was a hoax!!! Please do not tell your parents otherwise.
Thanks for being such great sports today! I hope our little object lesson at least helped you somewhat understand what the colonists must have felt like as England began to tax them without their consent. For those of you who decided to let the cat out of the bag, shame on you! Your friends like to talk. I know who you are!!!!
As for your papers, the final and perfected draft is due on Tuesday. That is your only homework for the weekend. Remember the five things you will be graded on: 1. Introduction and Conclusion - Make them good 2. Take a stance - Either Disney's portrayal is accurate and respectful or it isn't. 3. Evidence - Use evidence BUT make sure to use your own reasoning to explain how that evidence supports your claim 4. NO first person. This includes : I, WE, ME, MY, US, OUR, YOU 5. One page typed, double-spaced, 12 point font Next class period we will be reviewing for the test on Thursday. Be prepared! Hope you all had a lovely morning sleeping in! Today, your first draft of your Pocahontas paper is due. Due to our shortened class periods, we spent the entire time discussing your paper and performing a peer edit. If you missed it, please make sure to copy the link below and have a classmate or trusted friend edit it for you. Your final draft is due on TUESDAY!!! Also, please watch this link for a friendly reminder on the best way to write a thesis. If you have questions, please email me. Edit and rewrite your paper to ensure it is the best it can be!!!! I expect more than mediocrity!
What kind of parent do you think you will be? Will you be controlling, easy going, or a mix? As we begin our study of pre-Revolutionary thought, it helps to look at the colonies relationship with the British from a mother/child perspective. The colonists wanted some space, recognition and trust that Britain wasn't ready to give them causing a strain in their relationship. Discontent is on the horizon! See the power point below for notes if you missed them. No reading guide tonight - use the time to work on your paper that is due on Wednesday. Remember, I have high expectations! See you on Wednesday.
If you missed class today, we made butter! Yes, real butter. Why? To experience, in small part, colonial life. By the end of lecture today, the original 13 colonies were established. As you do your reading and study for the test, make sure you look for examples of these colonies developing seeds of modern democracy. For example, the House of Burgesses in Jamestown or the Mayflower Compact in Plymouth. are important evidences of self government developing in early colonial America!
First Informal Paper: Is Disney's version of the Pocahontas story "responsible, accurate and respectful?" Why or why not? You must answer the above questions using evidence from the sources we used in class as well as class discussions. To see copies of the primary and secondary sources from class, see the attachment under September 10. The sources are on pages 9, 10, and 11. You will be graded on the following five points: 1. Introduction and Conclusion with a strong thesis 2. No use of first person!!! No "I", "me" etc. 3. Take a strong stance - No fence sitting. Make your opinion known 4. Use EVIDENCE!!! Quote the sources, use them as a resource to defend your argument. 5. No more than 1 page typed, double spaced, 12 point font DUE WEDNESDAY, September 18!!! **Remember, I am Simon Cowell when it comes to paper writing! Don't disappoint me! Happy homecoming week! Today in class we analyzed the role of historians by examining how history is written. Have you ever played the game "telephone?" The same concept applies to history. The stories you hear and read about aren't as black and white as they appear on the page. They are merely someone's perspective and that perspective could potentially be full of bias, stereotypes and beliefs that would alter the truth of the story. As we discussed early colonial settlements by the English, we examined the infamous story of John Smith and Pocahontas in Jamestown. If you missed the activity, the link to the assignment is below. Your task is to fill out PAGE #13 by next class period. Use the sources on pages 7 and 8 of the link. Homework: 1-4
Great debates in all periods!!! I loved your passion and opinions, especially that you weren't afraid to express them! Today's lecture focused on historical and modern exploration. Is exploration worth the cost or should our focus as a society be on our immediate concerns? Get notes from a friend if you missed class. Homework - Reading guide 1:3. Have a great weekend! Go Jags!
Today we begin our study of America! We examined our misconceptions of the Native American people both historically and in modern times. We examined articles and video footage of modern reservations and addressed the question, "How did the strong and intelligent Native Americans of early times develop into the poverty stricken and unhealthy tribes of today?"
